About 45% of pregnant women and 33% of the women who recently gave birth experience Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP). Pain is often experienced in the lower back, sacrum, one or both of the sacro-iliac joints and the pubic joint (SP). Pain may also be felt in the hips, groin and lower abdomen and can radiate down the inner or posterior thighs. Symptoms can be one or both sided and can change from location from pregnancy to pregnancy. Symptoms can also change over the day, in location as well as in severity. Recent research shows that pain can persist for many years, affecting not just physical, but also social and emotional wellbeing.
